40 Under 40 Class of 2025 Highlights: César Wilhelm Gutiérrez Ávila & Erick Garcia
Heat Treat Today is privileged to oversee the 40 Under 40 recognition awards highlighting a group of rising young leaders in the North American heat treat industry every year. The Class of 2025 is a remarkable, high-achieving, and motivated group of individuals making significant contributions to the heat treatment industry. Here are two highlights from this year’s class.
César Wilhelm Gutiérrez Ávila - Manufacturing Engineer of Heat Treatment and Hot Formed, John Deere
- One of César’s most notable achievements was tackling a high scrap rate in moldboard plow components made from high-carbon steels. Applying Six Sigma methodology, he implemented controlled cooling after hardfacing, optimized quench media and rates, and standardized atmosphere control, contributing to a dramatically reduced scrap rate and cost savings. His leadership in training and process standardization ensured these gains were sustained over multiple years.
- In addition, he is driving in-house production of components previously outsourced for heat treatment, supporting design engineers in material and process selection, and spearheading an induction heat treatment program for part numbers, yielding immense cost savings.

Erick Garcia - Vice President Sales, North American Cronite
- Erick Garcia has built a decade-long career in the heat treating industry, distinguished by his ability to combine technical expertise with commercial leadership. Holding a bachelor’s degree in industrial design from the Autonomous University of Nuevo León, Mexico (UNAL), Erick began his career designing castings for centrifugal pumps at Ruhrpumpen Metals. His experience in manufacturing, calculations and analysis, and foundry engineering caught the attention of Cronite Mexico, which hired him in 2015 to expand its design team.
- Trained at Cronite’s main plant in France, Erick mastered fixturing design for all major furnace brands. As design project manager for the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, he assisted with industry trade shows, like ASM and FNA, and contributed to hundreds of projects for automotive giants such as GM, Ford, Toyota, and Honda, as well as key in-house heat treaters and OEMs. His work has spanned industries from food to automotive, steel, and construction, often solving complex geometrical challenges and delivering reliable, modular, and functional solutions.
