Improving High-Temp Testing of Composites
Designing ultra-efficient aircraft, lightweight automobiles, and modern power generation systems requires new materials with higher strength-to-weight ratios that can withstand higher operating temperatures for longer periods of time. These lighter weight, heat-tolerant materials help increase fuel efficiency and save energy, but characterizing these materials poses several challenges.
Discover solutions to these challenges in today’s Technical Tuesday article, written by Dr. Erik Schwarzkopf, staff scientist at MTS Systems. This is the special focus article that will appear in the Heat Treat Today 2021 Vacuum Heat Treat Systems November print edition.

40 Under 40 Class of 2021 Highlights: Jake McCann and Lindsey Newcomb
Heat Treat Today is privileged to oversee the 40 Under 40 recognition awards highlighting a group of rising young leaders in the North American heat treat industry every year. The Class of 2021 is a high-achieving, motivated, and heart-felt group of significant contributors to the heat treat market. Here are two highlights from this year’s class.
Jake McCann is a process metallurgist at Advanced Heat Treat Corp. Jake is an industry leader in surface hardening of various steels using induction, carburizing, and nitriding [. . . and] a subject matter expert of both plasma (ION) nitriding and gas nitriding, including recipe generation to create the nitride case and microstructure evaluations of the material post processing. Jake has become a leader in gas nitriding stainless steel and was crucial in the incorporation of a new type of nitriding AHT calls “S Phase,” a low temperature stainless steel nitriding process.
