Refractories, "the unsung hero of the manufacturing process," can't measure up to that moniker if their superpowers are worn down and not getting due maintenance. Guest columnist Pamela Gaul, director of marketing at Plibrico Company, LLC, examines the critical role the refractory lining plays in the success of manufacturing aluminum, why a refractory is susceptible to cracking under extreme conditions, and how to select and prepare refractory linings to achieve a longer service life.

Heat Treat Today is privileged to oversee the 40 Under 40 recognition awards highlighting a group of rising young leaders in the North American heat treat industry every year. The Class of 2024 is a high-achieving, motivated, and heart-felt group of significant contributors to the heat treat market. Here are two highlights from this year’s class.

In 2016, Dante Molle started at Aerospace Testing & Pyrometry, Inc. as their Certifications Officer and was quickly able to develop faster, more accurate ways of utilizing the features in Excel to generate ATP certifications. A few of his early successes included developing database tables, macros, and pull functions that made life a little easier. Instrumental in the development of the company's Aerospace Compliance Software (ACS), he was able to see the vision that Andrew Bassett (company president) had created and work with the team of developers to create it. He was the lead person for this project from day one and brought the software to life. In October of 2023, he was elevated to Chief Information Officer and is now responsible for the team that brought all the software development in-house and has already saved the company more than $200,000. Currently, Dante has a three-member team that works directly for him to assist with his continual projects under development. His ability to identify and analyze issues is unparalleled. When he sees an issue or problem, he always follows up with several ways to solve it. He has never come to the table without a solution, and he is a pivotal part of ATP/ACS. His contributions to the success of the company have been immeasurable Read more about Dante here.

Laura Oviedo began working at Global Thermal Solutions 11 years ago and has grown consistently in her evolving responsibilities. First, as a special projects engineer, She began investigating and delivering insightful and useful solutions to technically challenging problems due to her extensive knowledge in pyrometry and willingness to clarify points and alleviate client concerns in an urgent manner. Now, as a technical assistance engineer, Laura makes a particular effort to become an expert at interpreting compliance documents around the Nadcap requirements. She has been indispensable in helping Mexico’s aerospace and automotive industry grow into one of the obvious destinations for manufacturing. Alongside all these efforts, she also manages accounts for GTS Mexico, in central and northeast Mexico. This past year, she has been actively training her clients through sessions on site or online (as required), either updating her current clients on the new revision of AMS2750 or giving their new colleagues an introduction to pyrometry. These four-hour training sessions have focused on providing basic knowledge to clients or training them in new requirements for the specification required. Laura herself loves learning about new requirements and technologies — recently she has been learning about brazing and CQI-29 — so that she is able to provide new trainings for her clients. Always a gregarious and upbeat person, people enjoy working and learning from her. An owner of a heat treat software company who works with her stated, “I see her as an indispensable colleague in ushering in the next generation of technology to improve quality in our industry.” Read more about Laura here.
